Inside Joan Rivers and Johnny Carson’s Epic Falling Out

For more than 20 years, comedian Joan River was one of the most popular guests on one of television’s most popular shows, The Tonight Show. But his decision to host his own talk-show against “late-night king” Johnny Carson ended the longstanding bond between Rivers and his mentor and led to the most challenging and painful period in his career .

Rivers struggled for years before their big break
Born in 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, Joan Molinsky, initially wanted to become a theatrical actress, to support her dramatic goals in comedy in the mid-1950s. One of the few female stand-ups of the era, she spent time living as a writer and artist for nearly a decade, including fellow comics such as Woody Allen, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, and others.

By the mid-1960s, however, the life of rivers was an intersection. Her first marriage quickly ended in divorce, and many of her peers had mainstream success, while continuing to play small clubs and cabarets with their unique, female-focused routines and sets.

The most important launching pad of the era (and in the coming decades), was The Tonight Show, which has had a series of hosts since its 1954 premiere. Rivers performed first on the show when it was hosted by Jack Parr – a devastating appearance that was a career shock.

In 1962, Carson became its new host, and tonight became a showcase for the fast-rising comedian. Rivers without success auditioned for the show repeatedly, and in early 1965, many in the industry reported that she washes at just 31 years old.

‘The Tonight Show’ made him an overnight sensation

While there are conflicting theories about how he finally got his big break (Rivers credited Bill Cosby for promoting the show’s bookers), River finally made his first appearance on Carson’s show on February 17, 1965. Registered. Not taken for his comic writing skills.

As a stand-up, he was invited to sit next to him – an iconic spot – and quickly awoke the host, who noted on the air that he thought the rivers were going to become a star. As Rivers later said, she knew at that moment that her life was going to be different. and it was. Almost immediately, she began booking high-profile gigs and appearances and was hired as the writer of the Tonight Show.

Rivers performed nearly 100 Tonight shows, where she and Carson showed a quick, hot on-air ban, despite some off-camera contact, due to Carson’s great aloofness. When Rivers started a short-lived daytime talk show in 1968, Carson was her first celebrity guest, and she regularly credited him for the remarkable boost her career had given her.

While Carson was on vacation, Rivers began serving as a substitute host. While he rotated the position with several other comedians including David Brenner and Gary Shandling until 1983, he could not become the primary guest host.

Rivers later said that he received several offers to host his event but remained out of allegiance to Carson tonight. By the mid-1980s, however, her relations with NBC officials began to falter. She was angry that they had not signed a long-term deal to keep her with the show and the network, and when NBC, worried that Carson might retire soon, prepared a list of possible permanent replacements (which the press Was leaked in)), the rivers did not cut.

Carson was furious when he learned about River’s Fox show

In early 1986, Rivers was approached by Barry Diller and executives of the soon-to-be-launched Fox Television Network. Daler, eager to make a big splash to attract viewers and advertisers, hoping for a spectacular start-up on a “Big Three” network, tried to woo Rivers with a tentlizing offer – $ 10 million for his own show.

First female late night host. Fox also promised to hire River’s husband, Edgar Rosenberg, to serve as the show’s producer, an unusual business arrangement, but which helped sweeten the deal for Rivers.

While other Tonight regulars launched their own competitive shows (which all quickly failed against the anthem performed against Carson), she did so with her blessing, and Rivers assumed that she would be no different.

Negotiations on the new show took confidentiality, and Rivers was determined not to tell Carson until the plans were formalized, a decision he regretted. She later said that she avoided talking to Carson out of fear that the deal might fall and because NBC and Tonight officials urged everyone on the show to discuss difficult or sensitive matters with the host team avoid doing.
